Elviria is an upmarket area within the Marbella municipality. It’s always a very popular area for families visiting on holiday but it’s also a popular area to live, due to its good infrastructure of schools, medical services and its vast selection of bars, restaurants and supermarkets.
Elviria can be divided into four distinct areas all of which are slightly different and with quite a difference in property prices.
Beachside of the main road – Elviria has one of the best beaches on the coast so this area is extremely popular. This is where you can find the 5 star, Don Carlos hotel which has been a landmark of the area since the 1980’s, and is home to the famous Nicki beach club. There is the usual supply of beach restaurants but also a good sized commercial area with a supermarket, newsagent, chemist and several bars and restaurants. If you want to be near a good beach and, also be near shopping and eating establishments Elviria beachside is a very good option.
Non beachside, new area – just across the main road you will find two large Commercial areas with plenty of shops, bars, restaurants, coffee shops and supermarkets. The surrounding area going up into the hills has been developed in the last 15-20 years and so there is a good supply of modern apartment complexes and villas.
Old part – although most of Elviria is a typical holiday type area, built in the last 10-20 years, there is actually, an original town and this area is a bit more traditional with a church, post office and central square etc.
La Mairena – often considered to be a separate area in its own right, but it is part of Elviria. Located 5km above the centre of Elviria, La Mairena is a World UNESCO biosphere Reserve site, which means that, not only is it an area with a tremendous variety of wildlife and beauty but building is very strictly limited. Only 5% of land can be built on.
Approximately 40 minute drive from Malaga airport, 15 minutes to Marbella town, 20 minutes to Puerto Banus and 60 minutes to Gibraltar.
How to get there from the airport
Public transport is a bit limited. There is currently no train service running along the coast so it’s either a taxi (approximately €60) or a bus. There is a fast, cheap, direct bus to Marbella central bus station from where you would need to take a local bus along the coast road to Elviria. This will be cheap (approx. €10) but will involve 2 buses and a journey time of at least 1.5 hours. Alternatively, go to Fuengirola (there is a train to here from the airport) and catch the bus service that runs along the coast road. This option will involve several stops along the coast.
There is a medical centre in the old part of Elviria which offers general medical care. There are several pharmacy’s in various parts of Elviria and there is a more extensive choice of doctors, dentists and medical facilities in Calahonda, a 5 minute drive away.
Santa Maria golf course is situated in Elviria. This is a mid standard course that also has a good number of full time members giving it an excellent club atmosphere.
The Greenlife Golf Centre offers some of the best practice and learning facilities on the coast.
Amazonia – an adventure park of trees, zip lines and various activities for all ages.
Gym Estrella Del Mar – a few gyms in the area including one in the Estrella beach club.
Tennis – There are tennis courts, open to the public, in the Don Carlos hotel or there are tennis clubs in nearby El Rosario or Calahonda
The English International college is in Elviria and considered to be one of the best private schools on the coast.
There is also an excellent German run school in the la Mairena area.
Elviria is one of the best areas on the coast for such facilities. There are hundreds of restaurants ranging from the Michelin stared, El Largo to basic family run Spanish restaurants and everything in between and every type of food. With the number of bars, coffee shops and supermarkets in the area Elviria is perfect for people wanting to be close to the action.
On the beachside of the road fairly old studios/1 bedroom apartments start at €135,000. 2 beds can be found for €160,000 although on some of the more exclusive developments like, Hacienda Playa, Los Golondrinas or White Pearl Beach, expect to pay €400,000 upwards.
On the non beachside of the road prices would normally be lower than beachside but in Elviria most of this area is much more modern so prices tend to be similar but you will get a newer property for the same money.
La Mairena is the cheapest area in Elviria with prices for a good, modern 2 bed starting at €150,000.
