In 1966 Prince Alfonso de Hohenloe, who had already put Marbella on the map, asked Noldi Schreck, who was the architect responsible for the Beverly Hills hotel to come and visit and asked him to do some work on his Marbella Club Hotel.Whilst in Marbella Schreck met local business man Jose Banus and the idea of Puerto Banus was born. A sophisticated Andalucian village and marina capable of taking in the large private yachts of the time was proposed and in 1970 the port was opened named after Jose Banus. The lavish opening attended by, amongst others, Prince Rainier, Princess Grace of Monaco, Hugh Hefner, Roman Polanski. A young Julio Iglesias was hired to sing for the guests and 300 waiters from Seville served lavish food including 22 kilos of beluga caviar over 1500 guests.

Puerto Banus quickly established itself as the playground for the rich and famous. With its luxury yachts, designer shops and boutiques, elegant bars and restaurants. To this day, it still oozes glitz and glamour. The 1970’s saw the area grow in popularity wit the oil rich Saudi Arabians and the Royal family still have a huge mansion a few miles away on the Golden Mile and a luxury yacht in the marina. The port is the perfect spot to people watch whilst sipping a cocktail or to party the night away in one of its many clubs. The infamous Sinatra’s bar is the perfect place to people watch people whilst sipping a cocktail and admiring the Ferraris, Porches and Bentleys as they cruise by. Shops include the large El Corte Ingles department store behind the port or the fashionable branded shops on the port itself such as Gucci, Christian Dior, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana etc.

There is a regular boat service to Marbella. On the other side of the main road is the area known as Nueva Andalucia and this stretches into the hillside and contains luxury villas and apartments as well as 3 of the best golf courses on the coast,
Los Naranjos, Las Brisas and Aloha. In fact the area is also known as Golf Valley. At the bottom of Nueva Andalucia and walking distance into the port is a bull ring and bar/restaurant area known as Central Plaza. Every Saturday this holds a huge street market popular with residents and tourists and goods sold include fruit, vegetables, flowers and plants. Fashion stalls sell leather jackets, handbags, shoes and scarves and a whole variety of things.

The popular La Sala restaurant has opened recently with a new night club – Aqua Mist.
